Project Type: Sustainability

Energy Recovery and Water Utilisation

Inghams Enterprises (NZ) Pty Ltd has one of the largest chicken processing facilities in New Zealand. The site requires a substantial amount of water to allow this processing to continuously operate. Inghams identified that there was potential to reduce its heavy reliance on a town water supply while at the same time using low level geothermal heat and recovering heat from an existing ammonia cooling system to generate hot water.

Techo was engaged to review Inghams existing processes and propose an engineered solution from their initial concept. After a detailed review on-site, a solution and a budget was proposed and agreed on.

Project Value: $400,000

Duration: 3 Months

Project Type: Turn-key, Health & Safety managed under Inghams Permit to Work System

Key Points:

  • Tie-ins into site critical services with no disruption to production operations
  • Location of significant unidentified underground services for the drilled running of a 120NB HDPE pipe over a 120m distance. Service location and installation completed in 1 day
  • Engineering of a more than 400m water supply header to meet the sites hot water demands with surplus capacity for potential future demands
  • Use of low level geothermal heat with additional heat recovery from the site ammonia system that further reduces the Inghams carbon footprint

Outcome:

A client that is very happy with a relatively small investment achieving significant environmental and production benefits
