Project Type: Energy Recovery

High Strength Waste Cooling
  & Heat Recovery

Our client was faced with regular failures in the waste water distribution and irrigation network caused by high temperature in the waste stream. Solving the problem presented an opportunity to recover the heat into a useful format which, in addition to adding value, also aligned well with the client's efficiency and sustainability goals.

Based on the concept engineering developed by a consulting firm the client estimated that annual savings of approximately $90,000 were achievable. Techo was then engaged to deliver a fixed price, turn-key solution. Techo's engineers developed the initial concept into a solution which far exceeded the clients' expectations, with annual savings of $300,000 now being achieved.

The installation of the project involved installation of a new HSW manifold, pumps, heat exchangers, tying into the existing complex cold and hot treated water, demin water and heat recovery systems, commissioning and optimisation.

Project Value: $1.5 Million

Duration: 12 Months

Project Type: Fixed Price/Turn-key (mechanical, electrical, automation and commissioning). Health & Safety managed under the client's Safe Work System

Construction man hours: 6,000

Key Points:

  • Process, civil, mechanical, electrical and automation design;
  • Equipment specification procurement;
  • Critical process and electrical ties-ins during a very tight shutdown window;
  • Removal of a redundant structure, excavation (with contamination in the soil) and installation of a new concrete foundation;
  • Installation of underground pipework and services;
  • Manufacture and installation of a manifold to collect the high strength waste;
  • Installation of heat exchangers, filters, pipe supports, piping, instruments and valving;
  • Installation of new remote PLC cabinets and variable speed drives;
  • Commissioning, optimisation, verification and documentation;

Outcome:

  Heat recovery exceeded expectations, saving around 40T per day of steam, providing savings of over $300k annually, which they are seeing in real terms in the plant

  The temperature of the HSW leaving the factory is maintained at 40degC or under - which is safe for the piping network.

Client Testimonial

Techo was the lead contractor in one of several major capital projects on site. One item of the scope was to remove heat from a waste water stream to protect the irrigation infrastructure.

A simple solution would have been to install cooling towers. However, the team came up with a solution to gain the benefit of recovering the heat from the waste water and transfer this to the hot water supply circuit on site. This has helped the business to save approx. $300,000 per year.

Techo provided outstanding service, from design through to project managing the build and commissioning the new process. Working as a team to get the right outcome for the customer.

Fantastic work and we would work with Techo anytime in the future.
